Online Quiz League UK - Newsletter - 2024-12
OQL Season 14 has finished, and the cup competition is well under way but there are now lots of exciting things happening across OQL with registration open for other events and we have some other events to report about so here is our December 2024 newsletter.
OQL Divisional Champions
OQL Season 14 was the closest one on record with four teams still in with a shot at the Division 1 title on the final day. Ultimately it was Tim Gyda I who came out on top to win their first ever Division 1 title.
Here is a list of all our league champions and promoted teams
- Division 1 – Champions - Tim Gyda I, Runners up - The Alan Partridge Project
- Division 2 – Winners - Marauders, also promoted - The Kew Tours
- Division 3 – Winners - SQF, also promoted - Strong Fauna
- Division 4 – Winners - Wigton Wanderers, also promoted -TOWIE, Underdogs and Ipso Scratcho
- Division 5 – Winners - 24 Minutes from Tulse Hill, also promoted - Koan and Punishment, Social Quizstancing and Let’s Get Quizzical
- Division 6 – Winners – The Latecomers Plus - also promoted – Ordeal by Ignorance, Lucky Dip and The Rota Madmen.
- Division 7 – Winners - Strangers in a Strange Land, also promoted - The Acquizitors, Quidnuncs and OK Zoomer.
- Division 8 – Winners – Manatees, also promoted - ~ Swinton, NewBQS and Video Audio Disco.
Season 15 of OQL commences on Wednesday January 8th 2025. Existing teams can confirm they are returning for Season 15 via MyPage located at https://quizcentral.net/qc/Online_Quiz_League_UK_-_My_Page . Simply click the button to confirm you are returning. At MyPage you will also find payment details on how to pay your registration fees.
Brand new teams pay just £55 for their debut OQL season and new teams or individuals can register for Season 15 via our website at https://quizcentral.net/qc/Online_Quiz_League_UK_-_Register . Individuals will either be placed on an existing team or put together with other individuals to form a new team for Season 15. Registration closes on Friday 3rd January 2025

2024 OQL Buzzer Quiz
The 2024 OQL Buzzer Quiz played out on Saturday 23rd November at Bishop Challoner Catholic College in Birmingham. 55 teams from all across the country participated in what we believe was the largest event of this type ever in the UK.
Huge congratulations to Quizbowl Cabal who defeated Dartologists in the grand final to win their fourth consecutive Cup.
The other winners were as follows

- Saucer – TOWIE
- Spoon – I Love Rowies
The buzzer quiz is probably the most popular quiz event in the world with all 55 spaces selling out in under one minute!
A huge thank you to everyone for attending and the many, many readers, writers and organisers who helped make the event such a huge success.
Pop Culture Challenge
Season 9 of Pop Culture Challenge is now OPEN for registration! Our hugely popular individual quiz which focuses solely on the pop culture side of quiz, film, tv, pop music, sport, celebs, food and drink and much, much more will start on Monday 3rd February and registration is open until Saturday 1st of February.
Registration is just £35 per player, or if this is your first season you’ll get a discounted entry of just £25.

Connections Online Quiz League
Our exciting quiz competition based on the hit BBC show Only Connect is returning in February for our 9th season and we are now open for registration. Season 9 will run from February 11th until the middle of May.
Brand new teams should go to https://quizcentral.net/qc/Connections_Online_Quiz_League for more details and to register. It costs just £150 for a new team to participate and for that you’ll get at least 11 matches played under the guidance of a professional host and with questions expertly written and edited by our experienced COQL writing team.
We are also offering a completely free taster tournament for brand new teams. You’ll pay no money at all but will get to play 3 COQL matches to see if you wish to commit to the full season. The taster tournament runs from January 14th to February 2nd. Teams who play in the taster tournament are under no obligation to play the full season.
This event has become the most popular online OQL event, and we are always welcoming of new teams and players. If you’re an individual without a team just sign up via the link above and we’ll put you on a new team with like-minded individuals.
January 2025 will also see the 4th iteration of the COQL World Championships, colloquially known as the Cross Pond Challenge where the best teams from our UK and US conferences will compete to find our global COQL champions.

OQL Quiz Weekender
The first ever OQL British Quiz Weekender took place in Blackpool in July and was an incredible success with 140 quizzers participating in a multitude of quizzes and social activities. We’re delighted to announce that this event will be returning for 2025, and we have booked the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly for the dates of 1st to 3rd August 2025. For just £160* quizzers will experience 3 days of fantastic quiz fun and many opportunities to meet and socialise with other quizzers.

Live VIII
OQL’s Live VIII returns in January. This is a series of in person written quizzes where all players undertake the same 240 questions at the same time so we can find our overall winner as well as all our subject champions. After the main quiz we offer a fun team quiz and a buzzer quiz so everyone will get a full day of fun quiz for just £14. The first event of the year will take place on Saturday January 25th at venues around the UK and Ireland and to welcome everyone to the first event of the year we are running a special “quiz for a quid event” where all players at every venue will pay just £1 for a full day of quiz fun!
We still need to fully confirm all our venues but as soon as we do we will open registration and email full details out.
International Culture Challenge (ICC)
Season 8 of OQL’s International Culture Challenge is now well underway and we have over 300 players from over 20 different countries tackling a whole host of academic and cultural subjects each week. This competition runs until January 2025
