FAQs

What is the British Quiz Weekender?

It’s a three day quizzing extravaganza with a variety of different quizzes and events over the three days.

When and where is this taking place?

Friday 1st to 3rd August at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly in Manchester City Centre. The first event starts at 1pm on the Friday and the final one ends at 5pm on Sunday.

What kind of quizzes are taking place?

There is a huge range of quizzes, individual quizzes, pairs quizzes and team quizzes. You can see the full schedule here.

What will I win for winning a quiz?

All winners will receive trophies or medals depending on the event.

There are two individual subject quizzes happening at the same time and I want to play both of them, is this possible?

Unfortunately not. We have tried to separate the quizzes to ensure as little overlap as possible but it isn’t logistically possible for someone to play two events that start at the same time. You will be able to review the questions after the event.

Do I need to register as a team or can I register solo?

Everyone registers individually for this. By all means come with your entire quiz team but you’ll all register separately.

I don’t have a pair or a team for those events, does that mean I can’t play them?

Don’t worry, for the pairs quiz people can organise their teams in advance or if they turn up to play solo we’ll do a random draw to put single players into pairs. The regions teams will all be organised in advance based on the region you indicated when you registered.

I don’t like the look of one of the quizzes what do I do at that time?

None of the quizzes are compulsory; if you don’t want to play anything at a particular time then you can visit one of our break out rooms or just take some time to yourself and visit Manchester.

What break out rooms are available?

At all times during the event there will be a chill out room where people can sit down in a quiet space and just relax and recharge. There will also be a board game room where people can just play board games instead of quiz. Furthermore, there will be a buzzer quiz room set up with buzzer quiz questions and buzzer sets so if you want to do that instead of the scheduled quizzes then just head into that room.

Have you organised a discounted hotel rate?

Yes we have; all attendees receive a 20% discount on the best available rate at time of booking. To make your hotel booking simply head to their website here. If, for any reason, you are having issues applying the discount code please email us at info@onlinequizleague.com and we’ll send you a step by step guide.

Do I have to stay at the hotel?

No you don’t, you are welcome to book anywhere you like in Manchester to stay or just travel in each morning.

What activities are their for the Saturday night?

We have nothing official scheduled. There will be informal quizzing taking place in the International Suite and all our side rooms will be open for you to enjoy. You can also head out into Manchester for the evening.

What other meals are included in the booking?

No other meals are included but you can book breakfast and dinner direct with the hotel when booking your room and lunches can be included at an extra £16 per day for a grab bag or £20 for a 2 course buffet lunch. If you want to book the lunches then this is booked through OQL and should be included when making your initial registration. You then pay the costs per lunch to OQL who will provide you with vouchers upon your arrival at the hotel.

Is the hotel and venue fully accessible?

Yes, our events take place over two floors of the hotel but all rooms are accessible by lift. There are a couple of steps into the Garden View Room but there is also a wheelchair lift adjacent to it. The hotel offers accessibility rooms and lifts are available to the restaurant, bar and all hotel rooms. If you have any special requirements please contact us to advise and we’ll do all we can to accommodate you.

I’ve other plans that weekend, is it possible for me to just come for one day?

Yes, you are able to book day passes. These cost £75 per day and entitle you to full access to all quizzes and side rooms for that day.

How are teams for the regions event picked?

When registering please declare your three regions in preferential order. These must be places you were born, live now or have lived for 3 years or more during your life. OQL will then assign the regions teams as best we can, ensuring as many people as possible get their first choice.

What if there aren’t enough people in my region to form a team?

If this happens we may extend regions to cover larger areas. For example, last year we had a South West region rather than separate teams for Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.

How does the eliminator section of the individual quizzes work?

The top 10 scorers in each of the individual quizzes are entered into an extra ‘eliminator’ competition. Players answer questions in reverse order of score. Players have two lives and as soon as they have lost both lives they are eliminated. The last person standing is the champion of that category.

My partner/friend/children etc want to come with and watch me is that okay?

Some of the quizzes won’t be especially viewer friendly but they are welcome to come with you and can come and go as they please. If you want to order lunches for your partner/friend then please include that on your registration.

All quiz attendees must be aged 18+, anyone younger than that won’t be able to attend the event or spectate any of the quizzes, but is obviously welcome to stay in the hotel.

I don’t know yet if I’ll be available, can I book spaces?

You can contact us at info@onlinequizleague.com to reserve a space. If we are getting close to capacity we may contact you and ask you to pay a deposit or confirm you will definitely be attending.

Is there a limit on the number of people who can attend?

The venue can comfortably hold 320 people but we will not be able to go above that number. If we are getting close to capacity we will announce this.

This all sounds great! How do I register and pay?

Simply head over to the register page located here you can then select your ticket and any lunches you might want for Saturday and Sunday and then pay. You have the option to pay using Google Pay or a credit/debit card or, if you’d prefer you can use PayPal or bank transfer. You’ll receive details of how to do the latter two after registering.

Once registered you will receive a link to a form which you need to fill in to select your regional options and which subject quizzes you’ll be playing.
