As OQL Season 6 comes to an end, there's lots to report on, and it felt sensible to draw this up in a newsletter rather than text in an email.

JON JACOB CUP

The handicap competition named after Jon Jacob commences on Wednesday. Here's how it works.

Preliminary Round will be played on Wednesday 23rd March. 96 teams will play this week, the winners progress to the Cup 1st round, the losers move to the Plate Preliminary Round Cup R1 will be played on Wednesday 30th March. The 48 winners from the preliminary round play each other, the winners move to R2 the losers are eliminated. The 16 teams who received a bye in week 1 will play each other, the winners move to Cup R2, the losers move to Plate R1

Cup R2 and Plate R1 will be played on Wednesday 6th April. At this stage both competitions will have 32 teams. The winners progress and the losers are eliminated.

Cup R3 and QF and Plate R2 and QF will both be played on 13th April. Teams will be in groups of 4, one team will host the Zoom meeting and arrange for one game to be played in a breakout room. The two winners from the 1st game will meet in the quarter finals. Any team who loses either game this week are eliminated.

The Semis and Finals of both competitions will be played on 20th April. OQL will arrange the Zoom room and hosts for all matches so you just turn up and play

There are trophies for winners of the Cup and the Plate and runners-up in the Cup.

SEASON 7

Registration is now available for Season 7. This can be done on the website at the link https://quizcentral.net/league/oqluk/register/team. Once you've registered you will receive an email with payment instructions and once payment is received your place in season 5 is confirmed.

You are able to register for multiple seasons to receive a price break. It's £55 a season but if you sign up for two seasons you'll pay £105, three seasons is £150 and four seasons is £190. These are the dates for the upcoming seasons. Please note there will no longer be a friendly week before each season.

Season 7 - May 4th - July 13th 2022 (There is NO JJ cup after this season but BOOQL will run)

Season 8 - August 31st - 14th December 2022

Season 9 - January 4th - 19th April 2023

Provided we have enough teams we will continue to run a rookie division to establish the abilities of new teams before placing them in their divisions. If we do not have enough new teams for that we will place the new teams at a level which OQL believes appropriate.

You can also refer a new team to the league. For every team who joins the league and quotes your team name in their registration form your team will receive £20 credit. So, sign a few teams up and you'll get a free season with OQL.

INTERNATIONAL CULTURE CHALLENGE

The third season of our excellent competition International Culture Challenge will commence on May 16th. The competition will use the Mimir format. If you are unfamiliar with the format you can read full details on the website.

This competition will focus purely on the more serious side of quiz, Classical Music, Art, History, Sciences, Geography etc. All players will play 6 matches to determine your division for the knock out tournament. You will then be placed into a group of 16 in a straight knock out to find each divisional champion.

Entry for this competition is just £25 for 9 matches and if you read matches for other people you can accumulate uncapped OQL credit so read for enough matches and you could be playing OQL for free indefinitely!

This is a worldwide competition and with over 300 players in previous seasons it truly is one of the most prestigious individual quiz competitions in the world.

MAGNUSSON- TREBEK TROPHY

The Magnusson-Trebek Trophy is a season competition between the UK and IRE teams and the US teams.

All teams and players who have qualified for this competition will be notified shortly, but if you would like to spectate and cheer your countryfolk on then just let us know.

BRAIN OF ONLINE QUIZ LEAGUE

The Brain of Online Quiz League competition is an annual individual event using the MIMIR format and covers a full range of subjects. This will run during this season and full details on how to participate will be announced shortly

OQL BUZZER QUIZ

OQL ran our first ever in person event when we ran the inaugural buzzer quiz at Bishop Challoner Catholic College in King's Heath, Birmingham. 30 teams turned up for the event which was won by Quizbowl Cabal who defeated Geoff Maltby Fan Club in the final.

The Plate was won by Bob's Online and the Bowl by Thrown Together.

It was an absolutely fantastic event and we plan on running this again in 2022 and will provide details once they are available.

SEASON 6

This is a UK-Centric competition but we are welcoming competitiors from all around the world and with over 300 players participating in Season 2 we expect this to be the world's biggest online Mimir tournament.

CONNECTIONS ONLINE QUIZ LEAGUE

One of the biggest hits in the world of quizzing in 2021 has been the introduction of the Connections Online Quiz League. A competition based on the hit BBC show, Only Connect. Season 3 will commence in February 2022 and will be opening shortly for registration. If you are interested in taking part please see our website https://quizcentral.net/connections/coql

OQL have a lot of plans for the future, including more in person events, but none of this would be possible without the loyalty of all our wonderful players. I can never thank you all enough for participating in OQL and I really hope you stay with us for a long time. SEASON 5

We are now encouraging teams to register for Season 5. There are lots of ways to confirm your place in the competition. Firstly you can register at https://quizcentral.net/league/oqluk/register/team. Please put any team line-up changes on your registration form.

You can just email [[2]] to advise us you're returning and let us know any line-up changes. Or, just feel free to message Jon Stitcher directly.

Once you've confirmed you're returning your registration is confirmed by making payment. Please make the payment of £55 at paypal.me/OQL . Thank you to all of those who've already done this.

You may have seen that the schedule has been change slightly to allow for longer breaks between seasons and a full summer break, these are the dates of the upcoming seasons.

Season 6 – January 7th – April 22nd 2022

Season 7 – May 4th – July 13th 2022 (There is NO JJ cup after this season but BOOQL will run)

Season 8 – August 31st - 14th December 2022

Any new teams to the league will start in a rookie division. They will then be moved into the main league after their first season, occasionally an extra strong rookie team may need to go quite high in the main league which could result in some extra relegations. We will only do this if necessary.

OQL POP CULTURE CHALLENGE

This competition focussing on Pop Culture has just begin with over 300 entrants! We are overwhelmed by your enthusiasm for this competition, we'll be running this again in early 2022 so please keep an eye on our Facebook groups for more information.

OQL are excited to announce that in November we will be commencing our first ever Buzzer Quiz. This will take place at Bishop Challoner Catholic College in King's Heath Birmingham. JUNE 2021

Dear teams,

This week marks week 8 of OQL season 4 so we are past half-way through the league season and have lots of exciting divisions, especially Division 1 where just 2 points separate the top 4.

I am writing to you today as we have a few announcements to be made, these can also be found in the newsletter section of the website so please share these with your teammates:

JON JACOB CUP

Each season we run the Jon Jacob handicap cup. As the name suggests, this is a handicap cup competition open to all teams who have played in the league this season. There is no additional cost to this and the cup will run for 5 weeks with teams playing a maximum of 7 games and, because we run a plate competition, all teams play a minimum of 2 matches. If you wish to play in this competition you don't need to do anything and we will email you with all the details prior to the commencement of the competition. If you do NOT wish to participate please email [[3]] to alert us.

EURO 2020 SEMI FINAL

It has been brought to OQL's attention that there is a chance that one of the home nations could be playing in a European Championships Semi Final kicking off at 8pm on Wednesday 7th July. Whilst we appreciate that there are large amounts of players in OQL who have no interest in football we also acknowledge that there are a lot of people who would prefer to watch this match rather than play a quiz.

We took a poll of our players in the Facebook group and the majority have voted for the following:-

Should England, Scotland or Wales make it to the semi-final match being played on the 7th July then OQL will postpone all matches, the league will be delayed one week and everything will continue from then.

This means that Season 5 will start straight after season 4 and the Cup and Plate finals would be played on the 25th August instead of the 18th. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to any teams but we do feel it is the correct decision. We will announce the postponement as soon as we know that England, Scotland or Wales will be playing in this match.

CONNECTIONS ONLINE QUIZ LEAGUE

OQL run a few events and one of the most popular is our Connections Online Quiz League. This is based on the hit BBC show, Only Connect. Season 2 is due to commence in August and you can read about the competition and sign up at https://quizcentral.net/connections_online_quiz_league.php . You can also read the comments from players who played in the first season and watch some matches.

LOW BROW MIMIR

The 2nd season of the Low Brow Mimir will commence on the 23rd August. This competition encompasses all things pop culture. The questions are all on subjects like, TV, film, Pop Music, sport and games, lifestyle, celebrities etc. This is an individual competition and because of our unique format everyone has a genuine chance of winning a trophy. From now on, all new teams will enter in the bottom division which we expect to be Division 8 or 9. This ensures that it will normally be 2 up and 2 down from each division. This will alter only if a team drops out of the league or if a team are so dominant when they join the league that we feel it necessary to give them a double promotion.

You can also refer a new team to the league. For every team who joins the league and quotes your team name in their registration form your team will receive £20 credit. So, sign a few teams up and you'll get a free season with OQL.

OQL HIGH BROW MIMIR

OQL are launching a brand new individual competition which will start in April 2021. The competition will use the Mimir format that was used in the BOOQL tournament last summer and the Low Brow Mimir. If you are unfamiliar with the format you can read full details on the website.

This competition will focus purely on the more serious side of quiz, Classical Music, Art, History, Sciences, Geography etc. All players will play 6 matches to determine your division for the knock out tournament. You will then be placed into a group of 16 in a straight knock out to find each divisional champion.

Entry for this competition is just £20 for a minimum of 6 matches and if you read matches for other people you can accumulate uncapped OQL credit so read for enough matches and you could be playing OQL for free indefinitely!

This is a worldwide competition and with over 300 players signed up already it is shaping up to be the biggest ever online individual Mimir competition.

MAGNUSSON- TREBEK TROPHY

The Magnusson-Trebek Trophy is a season competition between the UK and IRE teams and the US teams. The top two teams in each division will play their US counterparts in a one-off match all played in early May. There will also be an all-star game for the top scoring individual players, an all-star novice game, for the best newcomers and a match between the setters. The USA currently hold the trophy after an 8-3 victory in January so we're hoping to see the UK and IRE seek revenge this time around.

All teams and players who have qualified for this competition will be notified shortly, but if you would like to spectate and cheer your countryfolk on then just let us know.

CONNECTIONS ONLINE QUIZ LEAGUE

We now run a competition based on the hit BBC show, Only Connect. The current competition is about half way through but we will be running this again later in the year. If you are interested in taking part please see our website https://quizcentral.net/connections/coql

SPEEDQUIZZING

OQL also now run a monthly speed quizzing event. These are played on the 2nd Saturday of the month and are played over Zoom. We currently have around 150 people playing this each month but can always accommodate more. THE FUTURE

OQL have a lot of plans for the future but none of this would be possible without the loyalty of all our wonderful players. I can never thank you all enough for participating in OQL and I really hope you stay with us for a long time.
